Adaptive learning is an innovative approach to education that involves the use of technology to personalize learning experiences for individual students. The concept of adaptive learning is based on the idea that different students have different learning needs and styles, and that the traditional one-size-fits-all approach to education is not effective in meeting these diverse needs.

Adaptive learning technology uses algorithms and artificial intelligence to analyze a student’s learning progress, strengths, and weaknesses, and to adjust the content and delivery of educational materials accordingly. This technology enables students to learn at their own pace, with personalized feedback and support, which can increase their engagement and motivation in the learning process.

One of the main advantages of adaptive learning is that it can provide a more effective and efficient way to learn. With traditional classroom learning, students often have to learn at the pace of the teacher, which can be frustrating for students who may be struggling or already understand the material. Adaptive learning, on the other hand, allows students to progress through the material at their own pace, with personalized support and feedback. This can result in faster and more efficient learning, as students are able to focus on areas where they need the most help.

It also allows teachers to better understand their students’ learning needs and progress. The technology can provide teachers with real-time data on students’ performance, which can help them identify areas where students are struggling and adjust their teaching methods accordingly. This can lead to a more personalized and effective approach to teaching, which can improve student outcomes.

History of trials of adaptive learning:

There have also been examples of failed trials of adaptive learning. Here are a few examples:

  1. LA Unified School District: In 2015, the LA Unified School District launched a $1.3 billion initiative to provide iPads to every student and teacher in the district, along with adaptive learning software. However, the initiative was plagued with problems, including technical difficulties, security concerns, and a lack of teacher training. The program was eventually abandoned in 2018, with many students and teachers feeling that the technology was more of a distraction than a help.
  2. Gates Foundation: In 2015, the Gates Foundation funded an initiative to develop adaptive learning software for college-level math courses. However, the initiative was not successful, with the software failing to improve student outcomes or reduce costs. The foundation eventually abandoned the initiative in 2018.
  3. Knewton: Knewton was a leading adaptive learning company that raised over $180 million in funding. However, the company faced numerous challenges, including concerns about the accuracy and reliability of its algorithms, and a lack of evidence that its software was effective in improving student outcomes. In 2019, the company filed for bankruptcy.

These examples illustrate that while adaptive learning has great potential, but are mired by technological shortcomings. Adaptive learning needs cutting edge AI and algorithms that can develop accurate models of every student’s pace of learning. We believe that Abekus, our product, has solved the problem that has stumped many others in the past.

How we solved the problem?

We used 3 methods to solve what all the past trials faced:

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning: As artificial intelligence and machine learning continue to evolve, adaptive learning is likely to become more sophisticated and effective. AI-powered algorithms can analyze large amounts of data to identify patterns and personalize learning experiences in real-time.
  • Gamification: Gamification is the use of game elements, such as points, badges, and leaderboards, to make learning more engaging and motivating.
  • Microlearning: Microlearning involves delivering content in small, bite-sized chunks that can be easily consumed and retained. For eg. short quizzes and videos, to increase student engagement and retention.

Abekus is built with the concept of Adaptive learning at its core. Our state-of-the-art algorithms are designed to ensure users get maximum learning in minimum time. Leaderboards will keep you engaged while also informing you of your current standing among the best minds. And short questions would accelerate your speed of learning and retention.
